⛓️??⛓️??We begin meeting at SewallCrest Park just south of SE Hawthorne and 31st at four pm on Krampusnacht, the 5th of December. I will post a pin in the event page to show where in the park to gather.
?The goal is to gather when there is still some light for pictures and time for those who wish to augment their costumes with regalia that I will bring to share.
?During this gathering and pic-taking and costume-completing time, there will also be a performance by the PDX Dancing Witches.
?As the sun sets and Krampusnacht begins, we will form into a procession and make our way at a leisurely pace northward to Hawthorne blvd.
?We then turn left and proceed to 30th Ave so that we may cross at a light with a crosswalk to the north side of Hawthorne.
?Then, slowly so as to savor the encounters we gradually saunter about two blocks at a time eastward from 30th to Cesar Chavez with a stop to sing the carol and to regroup. This is to prevent scattering or leaving any separated Krampusse behind.
?The Carol has been a feature of the parade for almost 15 years and gives a chance to do something recognizably holidayish and festive but culty enough to form significant memories in passers by. Those interested in joining in will have a few practice rounds before we start the procession and I will bring lyric sheets to pass out.
?windows and glass doors provide ample opportunities to interact with observers with occasional micro visits into taverns or shops to have a monster moment.
?When we reach Cesar Chavez we cross to the south side of Hawthorne and regroup, there’s a round of the Carol here. It can take a couple changes of the light for everyone to cross at the crosswalk depending on turnout.
?We then make our way westward a couple blocks at a time back to 31st with plenty of stops to wassail with the Carol and to be fierce yet festive winter devils in public.
?There’s a friendly tavern or two that likes to beckon some of us in and we serenade as we do a walk through and many eyes tend to be on us in front of Baghdad theater so we sometimes linger if feeling like it.
?Eventually we find our way back to 31st and, turning left to go southward again, we arrive back at the park to have a final chant and more pics and romping if it’s romping time or eating if it’s eating time or leaving if it leaving time.
?The actual trajectory is a simple lap around Hawthorne going about ten blocks there and back but what we are really doing is slowly crawling along as a vision-impaired monstrously unpermitted yet enthusiastically welcomed parade that can include hundreds of interactions between observers and each creature who wishes to make eye contact or a memory.
?”enthusiastically welcome” is flattening a much more ambiguous and varied range of reactions, interpretations, and attitudes that people have toward the Krampus Lauf. Some plan on it and wait for it with anticipation, some think that it’s inappropriate to inflict children with devil-encounters, some have no idea what’s happening and desperately try to make it go away by pretending to ignore this unexpected interruption of their happy hour plans. Some folks join us for a while, others really want to know what we are protesting or which side we are on or what we are promoting. I hope that we can intensify their curiosity yet never answer these questions.
?If you wish to join but do not have a costume already, I will be posting a thread on costume ideas with heavy emphasis on homespun diy crafting but not so heavy as to be exclusive or bitchy about it. I will also have a collection of my masks to lend which will form another thread.
?I will also be posting a thread with requests for various kinds of assistance doing things like transporting costume-gear to the park from my place in northeast and with carrying banners and forming rear-guard to prevent separations from the group etc.
