REFLECTIONS OF AN INDIAN DANCER
Reflections of an Indian Dancer is a cross-arts production consisting of a solo dance performance accompanied by a recorded soundtrack of spoken word, written and performed by the performer, Sooraj Subramaniam.
The work is anchored in three exquisite solo pieces that serve as an introduction to the Indian dance traditions in which Subramaniam is trained: Bharatanayam, Odissi and Kathak.
Bringing the work straight into the twenty-first century is the enlightening and at times startling spoken-word soundtrack that accompanies his movement enabling new audiences to access these highly narrative dance styles. Subramaniam’s deeply personal and often poetic reflections on his life journey as a dancer transport the audience into the interior world of the performer, inviting them to explore not only the dancer’s but also their own sense of identity.

Pending, offers a glimpse into January’s ongoing virtual mentorship with Bijayini Satpathy, more affectionately known as Didi, which began in 2020, the year the world stood still. Through this virtual training January has not only deepened her relationship with Odissi but has also embodied a sustainable practice that revolves around compassion, patience and respect.
This work challenges January’s perception of the Indian Classical Dancer and invites the audience to experience the unseen, invisible labour that goes into practice and sustaining an artform without the promise of the stage.
What does it look like when the dancer is responsible for her own practice with a Guru in the virtual cloud? What happens when the learning process is slowed down, when each lesson is spread over a month? When feedback that usually takes seconds, now takes weeks?
