The Phoenyx was formed in 2018 and performs as a 17-piece Big-Band, fronted by 1 or 2 vocalists. The Band is comprised of some of the best jazz musicians and educators in the Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.
While The Phoenyx performs Big-Band jazz from the golden-era of swing, popularized by the giants of the genre such as Glen Miller and Count Basie, the founding members decided early on to take the band in a different direction than what is typical for a big band. Instead of performing music from only one genre, listeners can enjoy and dance to a wide variety of music and styles, including Motown, Rock, Jazz, Country, Funk, Swing, and Broadway.
As such, The Phoenyx has become a favorite at local jazz clubs, not only playing swinging standards, but also unique big-band orchestrations and arrangements of pop songs penned by band leader, composer and arranger, Santino Gutierrez. At a typical show, the Phoenyx faithfully performs standards by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and spices things up with original arrangements of hit-music by Michael Jackson, The Doobie Bros, Carole King, Van Morrison, Shania Twain and more.
The Band’s diverse setlist of music has been well received by both audiences and musicians who typically don’t find the opportunity to play and hear music in a big band format that blends a wide variety of musical styles into a single show.
