A Call to Arms for Person-Centred Therapists
Louise Wilson
Saturday 22nd June 2024
The person-centred approach faces an uncertain future. The therapeutic landscape is hostile and aspects of the approach have been absorbed and reinterpreted by other modalities. The dominance of a diagnostic medical model places the power firmly with ‘expert’ clinicians rather than the individual seeking help.
This workshop will be an opportunity to come together as a community and share our experiences of what it means to be a person-centred therapist today. I will introduce themes from my article ‘A Call to Arms for Person-Centred Therapists’ published in 2023 (link below) and invite dialogue around diagnosis, power dynamics, social context and other aspects that participants find of interest. This article grew from feelings of frustration that person-centred therapy is frequently viewed as passive and ‘not enough’ for individuals in psychological distress.Rogers was radical in trusting the person to direct their own therapy and yet the approach is often misunderstood and underestimated. However, we are not powerless and there is scope for action. Together we can mobilise and connect in order to promote our philosophy and way of being and challenge the current psychological narrative.
