While young, Hedwig, born as Hansel in East Berlin, meets an American G.I. and falls in love. In order to marry him and escape to the West, Hedwig undergoes gender reassignment surgery. Unfortunately, the procedure is botched, and although she makes it to the West, she is soon left by her husband and is on her own in the wilds of America.
Years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts in rundown dives. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig - but then left her, taking all her songs with him. Will these shows help Hedwig see and appreciate the beauty and love still in her life, in her music, and in herself, or will they lead her to self-destruction?
