On Friday 29 May, The Centre for the Less Good Idea presents The Open Moment | Thinking in Photography.
This Open Moment follows a four-day experimental workshop for six professional photographers who work in, or have an interest in performance, theatre, and live art photography. Over the course of the workshop, they will explore what makes a compelling performance portrait, narrative storytelling within photography, and more.
Part think-tank, part communally led workshop, Thinking In Photography is a deep investigation into performance photography from a community of practitioners, thinking together about the practice of documenting performance.
The Open Moment will take the form of a public showing, featuring a combination of live performances and demonstrations that will be documented by the photographers in real time. These images will be shared and unpacked with the audience.
The Thinking In Photography participants are: Zivanai Matangi, Bash Hops, Stella Olivier, Christo Doherty, Andy Mkosi, and Thandi Sibeko.

Christo Doherty is a Johannesburg-based visual artist, photographer, and academic at the University of the Witwatersrand. His photographic practice spans live performance, dance, theatre, and constructed image-making, combining documentary sensitivity with an eye for movement, atmosphere, and visual storytelling.
Thandi Sibeko’s photography focuses on discovering abstract expressions of beauty in the natural world. She believes that everyone has a story to tell, and her story is told through photography. Sibeko’s journey into photography began in 2022-2024 at the Market Photo Workshop. Her passion lies in documentary, photojournalism, sports and commercial photography.
Zivanai Matangi is a Johannesburg-based freelance documentary and performance photographer, specialising in the arts. For Matangi, photographing performing artists affords him a level of creativity and experimentation that’s expanded his view on his craft. Instinct, sensitivity, and a love for storytelling are all qualities that he holds close to his practice.
Bash Hops is an omni-artist working across music, photography, and performance. As a performance and theatre photographer, he approaches and reads the room through the lens of rap, identifying rhythm and patterns to find poetic moments. His work mirrors what’s happening while shaping it, capturing the essence of what unfolds.
Stella Olivier is a documentary photographer specialising in South African artists and their studios. Since 2010, she has photographed the performances, operas, and behind‑the‑scenes work of William Kentridge both locally and worldwide, including the stages of Tate Modern, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Park Avenue Armory, and MASS MoCA. Her photographs have appeared in many press and hardcover publications around the world. She lives between Rosendal, Free State, and Johannesburg, South Africa.
Andiswa Mkosi is a cultural practitioner, musician, and visual storyteller working across photography, film, music, and performance. Her practice explores memory, spirituality, community, and everyday Black life, drawing on themes of family, matriarchal knowledge systems, and Xhosa womanhood to create intimate, layered narratives.
