About This Event
The OpenAI Forum is a global community of experts working together to advance OpenAI’s mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Since its launch in 2023, the Forum has brought together a diverse ecosystem of collaborators to build meaningful partnerships, exchange ideas and resources, and highlight AI applications addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
As part of this effort, OpenAI will host its first OpenAI Forum on the African continent in collaboration with Innovation City, bringing together 150 invited guests from across Cape Town’s innovation ecosystem. The event aims to strengthen connections and build community with the entrepreneurial and tech community.
What to Expect
About the OpenAI Forum, in Collaboration with Innovation City
On Thursday 28 May, Innovation City hosts the first OpenAI Forum on the African continent, bringing together a curated group of founders, operators, policymakers, and technologists shaping how AI is applied in real-world contexts.
This is not a conference. It’s a focused, high-signal gathering designed to connect the people building with the people enabling.
The programme moves from global perspective to local execution. You’ll hear directly from OpenAI on its vision for Africa, alongside insights from the City of Cape Town on how AI is being operationalised at a civic level. From there, the conversation shifts into applied use cases, including how AI is already scaling access in areas like public health.
At the centre of the event is a startup showcase featuring companies solving practical, on-the-ground challenges, from financial access and identity verification to language inclusion and urban infrastructure. Each presents a short, sharp view into how AI is being used where it matters most.
This is followed by a closing segment focused on what comes next: how collaboration between founders, institutions, and global platforms can accelerate meaningful impact.
You'll Walk Away With:
* A clear view of how AI is being applied across Africa today, not in theory, but in practice
* Perspectives from both global leaders and local operators working at scale
* Short, high-impact startup demos focused on real-world problems
* A curated room of decision-makers across tech, policy, and investment
* Conversations that prioritise substance over stage time
