About this Event
The Obesity Epidemic: Creating a perfect storm for chronic human diseases
Obesity is a multifactorial disease with a strong genetic component. No country has yet implemented a successful population-wide strategy to reverse the rising trends of obesity. Discovery scientists at Monash University and around the world are probing the complex biological and genetic mechanisms that contribute to the development of obesity to deliver new therapies to manage and treat this disease, and its associated complications.
Obesity is a complex health condition that is influenced by genetic, social, environmental and economic factors. Overweight and obesity place you at greater risk of developing a myriad of other diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, mental illness and some cancers.
Two-thirds of Australian adults are now overweight and 42.4 per cent of Australian men aged 65-74 years are considered obese. In 2018, 8.4% of the total disease burden in Australia was due to overweight and obesity, second only to tobacco use.
Join some of our leading health researchers as they discuss the conditions linked to obesity and how they are tackling this complex health condition as an urgent health priority.
