Founded in Traverse City in 1976 by Mike Gilmour and Mike Johnston, The Northwoods Improvisers is a revolving ensemble of highly-seasoned instrumentalists, now in their 50th year. With a number of fresh recordings on Detroit's Entropy Stereo, they're making the rounds in 2026. Current membership includes:
Mike Khoury - violin
Dominic Bierenga - flute, sax, bass clarinet
Donovan Boxey - sax
Tony Holland - sax
Jack O’Brien - bass and cello
Mike Johnston - bass and flutes
Nick Ashton - drums
