Rory Gallagher Music Library and Stevie G present...
The New School (music workshops)
November 30th 2024
11am to 12.30pm
Ages 14-17 years
Limited places available
These workshops will encompass an introduction into DJ culture and music production, led by Stevie G. Typically, the workshop will start with a quick run through the history of hip-hop and dance, before he shows youngsters some of the basics about mixing and remixing. This will lead to some music production, and it is hoped the teenagers will get involved and help build a track live on the day. It’s more of an introduction than a masterclass, and it is hoped it will be the first of many such workshops in Cork City Library.
The New school is a platform created by Cork DJ and radio presenter Stevie G, that aims to empower young people through music and the arts. Taking inspiration from the original ethos of hip-hop culture, The New School aims to educate, mentor and promote new music and artistic talent through workshops/events/partnerships and other methods. Already youngsters from a culturally diverse background in Cork have contributed to some of the educational videos that have been shared on our New school social media, and Stevie is currently creating an audio/visual documentary on hip-hop culture with these kids. Collaborations have begun with the Living Commons/Radical Institute/Sample Studios/Test Site/Magic Nights by the Lee/Marina Market/Cork Life Centre and other partners, and Stevie is also developing the New School in many of his workshops with Foroige and other bodies.
