Join Ryan Roney, Curator at Tellus Science Museum, as he shares the story of flower evolution, which is also the story of modern evolution synthesis. Darwin, Wallce, Mendel, and others observed in their laboratories and in the field how nature experimented for millions of years, with flowers.
Their observations became primary examples for not only understanding, but defining natural selection, variation, mutation, and inheritance. The fossil record records the innovations that led to the evolution of angiosperms and the further modifications that have led this group into terrestrial dominance in the plant kingdom. The rise of mammals from tiny creatures scurrying about the feet of dinosaurs to massive herds is intertwined with the evolution of flowering plants. Even the modern world of humans relies on the innovation of flowers and their fruiting bodies.
Ryan cares for the rock, mineral, meteorite, and fossil collections at Tellus Science Museum. His main efforts at Tellus seek to build the representation of Georgia’s earth history in the museum collections.
Attend in person at 7PM in the CNC Plaza Conference Room and bring a dish to share for the potluck. Make new friends and connections at Nature Club while learning all at the same time. Ryan’s presentation will begin at 7:30PM.
Ages 16+. $10 general public / $5 CNC Members. Advanced registration required by Wednesday, October 23.
