Hermeto Pascoal was one of Brazil’s greatest instrumentalists and composers — a brilliant and eccentric explorer of music from across Brazil, influenced by sounds far beyond its borders. A sorcerer and conjuror of sound, Hermeto was a prolific creator of music that can only be described as universal. He passed away in 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy through his compositions and the countless musicians he mentored.Panorama Brasil pays tribute to Hermeto in this special concert, joined by an extraordinary group of guests: guitarist Doug de Vries; pianist Barney McAll; guitarists Adam May and Paul Carey as part of Trio Agogo; and guitarist Rose M. Gonzalez, leader of Hermeto Magnético.
Formed by drummer Alastair Kerr in 2012, Panorama Brasil has spent more than a decade performing at major festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (with Orchestra Victoria), Stonnington Jazz (with Doug de Vries), and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival (with Vince Jones and Alda Rezende). The ensemble has also presented acclaimed concert series dedicated to Brazil’s great composers and movements, including Jobim, Baden Powell’s Os Afro Sambas (touring with Alda Rezende), Clube da Esquina (Melbourne Recital Centre), and Brazil’s Modern Poets — celebrating leading Brazilian songwriters post-1970.
