As winter begins, most gardeners relish abandoning their extensive list of daily garden chores that go along with the growing season. As the holidays approach we get lost in a whole new schedule of things to do. Now that the revelry has come to an end, the desire to garden often comes creeping back—just in time for late winter garden tasks.
Late winter is a critical window for setting the stage for healthy, resilient plant growth in the seasons ahead. This lecture will provide an overview of best practices for late winter garden maintenance, including dormant-season pest and disease management, perennial bed clean-up, soil conditioning, and tool care. We’ll discuss the timing and techniques for pruning woody ornamentals, strategies for managing overwintering pests, and how to evaluate soil conditions before spring planting. Whether you're managing ornamental landscapes, perennial borders, or edible gardens, this session will help you set the stage for an abundant spring.

Melissa Pace is an award-winning horticulturist, competing in numerous flower shows nationwide - from the Philadelphia Flower Show to specialized cacti and succulent showcases. A University of Rhode Island Master Gardener since 2003, she also maintains an active membership in the Cactus and Succulent Society of Massachusetts.
