About this Event
Bacchanalia presents a rare program devoted to Charles Frederick Weideman, one of 18th-century London’s leading flutists and a contemporary of Handel. Featuring the complete six concertos, opus 2, for one and two flutes, this concert brings to life music that once delighted audiences in London’s theaters and pleasure gardens. Performed on period instruments, these works reveal Weideman’s lyrical style, idiomatic writing for the flute, and close ties to the vibrant musical culture of Georgian England.
Founded in 2002 by flutist Laura Thompson, Bacchanalia is an early music ensemble dedicated to bringing music of the 17th and 18th centuries to life through spirited and engaging performances on original period instruments. The group takes its name from the ancient Greek festivals celebrating Bacchus, reflecting the determination of its members to combine musicological research with a fresh and unrestricted approach to music-making.
