Tickets on Sale Now!American composer Gabriela Lena Frank makes her Met debut with her first opera, a magical-realist reimagining of the Orpheus and Euridice myth centered on Mexico’s iconic artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. On the Day of the Dead, Frida rises from the underworld to reunite with Diego, and together they relive their stormy but passionate love, filled with both joy and anguish, before bidding a final farewell to life.
With a libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz, the opera features mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Frida and baritone Carlos Álvarez as Diego. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met premiere of Frank’s “confident, richly imagined score,” brought to the stage in a colorful, painting-inspired new production by director and choreographer Deborah Colker, following her acclaimed 2024 debut with Ainadamar.
