Among those impressed is Maddalena, daughter of the Countess de Coigny. Years later, during the Reign of Terror, Maddalena reveals herself as the anonymous admirer who has been writing to Chénier, and the two pledge their love. Gérard, once a servant in her household and now a powerful revolutionary, is torn between his passion for Maddalena and his loyalty to the cause. Wounded in a duel with Chénier, Gérard spares him and entrusts Maddalena to his care.
When Chénier is later accused of treason, Gérard confesses his false charges but cannot save him from the Tribunal’s death sentence. Maddalena, whose family has been destroyed by the Revolution, bribes her way into prison to join Chénier in his final hours. At dawn, the lovers face the guillotine together, choosing to die united rather than live apart.
