(2012, 138min/color, 35mm) Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Laura Dern. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is a mentally unstable WWII veteran whose search for purpose is complicated when he forms a profound yet explosive bond with author Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the leader of a mysterious philosophical movement known as “the Cause.” Driven by astonishing performances, this deep character study is also a visually stunning exploration of religion, power and social structures.
