Swan Lake is not only the most romantic, but perhaps the most “feminine” of classical ballets. At the heart of its imagery stands the swan maiden — a powerful female figure — and the female corps de ballet shines with particular brilliance.
Although often described as based on an old German legend about Prince Siegfried and Princess Odette, enchanted by the evil sorcerer Rothbart, such a legend never actually existed. The story of Swan Lake was imagined by Tchaikovsky himself, inspired by his travels through Bavaria and the beauty of Lake Schwansee.
