An immersive evening of modernism, rare access, and skyline views inside a Minoru Yamasaki landmark - part of the City Stories festival.
About this Event

Step into an evening of light, form, and atmosphere.

Join us for the return of The Luminary Society: An Exclusive Key to Extraordinary Spaces, set within the luminous modernism of the Northwestern National Life Building, designed by Minoru Yamasaki.

As daylight fades, this landmark of quiet elegance becomes the setting for an immersive evening of architecture and experience. Sip cocktails, enjoy curated bites, and move through spaces shaped by Yamasaki’s distinct vision—where structure, symmetry, and serenity come together to create something enduring.

Throughout the night, guests will encounter rare original drawings, guided explorations, and access to spaces not typically open to the public, offering a deeper connection to the ideas and ambitions that helped shape Minneapolis in the modern era.

For those seeking an elevated experience, the optional Skyline Tour extends the evening upward—starting in the tunnels below the building and culminating in a rooftop toast overlooking the city, where the skyline reveals itself in full.

This is a night of access, perspective, and possibility—where architecture is not just seen, but felt.

About Minoru Yamasaki

Minoru Yamasaki (1912–1986) was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, known for bringing a sense of grace and human scale to modernist design. His work often balanced structural innovation with delicate detailing, light, and symmetry—creating spaces that feel both monumental and serene.

Yamasaki is best known for designing the original World Trade Center in New York, as well as numerous civic, cultural, and corporate buildings across the country. In Minneapolis, his work helped shape the city’s postwar identity, with the Northwestern National Life Building standing as a defining example of his thoughtful and refined approach to modernism.
