Technology is on trial, and you’re the jury. It’s hammer time!
About this Event

Welcome to the Luddite Tribunal where we channel the revolutionary spirit of the Luddites and their critique of technology.

Join us for a night of critical discussion about digital technology with host of This Machine Kills podcast Jathan Sadowski and lawyer and digital rights advocate Lizzie O’Shea.

Then, we will put digital devices on trial. Bring along or suggest a piece of technology to be judged or simply join us to be part of the jury as we decide whether an item is an "obnoxious machine...hurtful to commonality" or socially useful.

Jathan Sadowski is a Senior Lecturer in Human-Centred Computing at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Jathan is also co-host of the weekly podcast This Machine Kills and author of two books: The Mechanic and the Luddite: A Ruthless Criticism of Technology and Capitalism (University of California Press, 2025) and Too Smart: How Digital Capitalism is Extracting Data, Controlling Our Lives, and Taking Over the World (MIT Press, 2020).

Lizzie O’Shea is a lawyer and founder of Digital Rights Watch, which advocates for freedom, fairness and fundamental rights in the digital age. Lizzie’s book Future Histories (Verso, 2019), looks at radical social movements and theorists from history and applies them to debates we have about digital technology today.
