Pre-registration is required to attend via ZOOM. Email Ivor Normand at [email protected]Chris Lobban, a biologist and member of Clan Logan Society specializes in microalgae (diatoms) biodiversity, was born in the UK and emigrated in his teens to Canada. An uncle had traced the Lobban family back to 1704 when they first became tenants of Knabbygates in Rothiemay. Fragmentary book records suggested there were two genetic lines, one from Banffshire and one from Inverness. When Chris tried to verify this with Y-DNA testing, he was shocked to learn his fatherline was Germanic! He joined DNA special interest groups and the Guild of One-Name Studies and has traced the ancestries back, even before the origin of surnames. The one-name study, includes Lobbans who got the name from being slaves, and a phylogenetic study, which traces the Y-chromosomes even into branches called Logan and Laban. All the results are detailed on Lobban.one-name.net, but Chris will provide an easy ramble through this, sometimes technical, material.
