The Lost Treasures of St Mary’sThe renovations of 1857 saw major changes to the fabric of the church. Some thought they were "most satisfactory", others, including Gwenllian Morgan and Joseph Cobb, thought they were for the worse. In this illustrated talk William Gibbs will tell some stories of the changes St Mary's has gone through. How some monuments were lost, how some were later found, William will examine the ways the church has changed over time (including the question of the dog door!).
William has been researching the work of John Evan Thomas, the Brecon born sculptor for some time and the story of his memorials in St Mary's first triggered his growing interest in the changing fabric of the church, an interest fuelled by the role of Gwenllian Morgan as a leading champion and recorder of Brecon's past.
Where are these two heads to be found? Who is this man and this woman? When were they created? Why are their eyes closed?
Tickets £10 on the door.
