The Loft, original Creation Records legends, set out on a UK tour in support of their forthcoming ‘debut’ album. They travel to Ramsgate on March 20th with the original line up of Pete Astor, Dave Morgan, Bill Prince and Andy Strickland!Since their infamous onstage split at the Hammersmith Palais in ‘85, their status as one of the UK’s most influential guitar bands of the 80s continues to grow and to influence a host of younger artists.
“It’s incredibly exciting to not only be setting out on tour again, but now with a brand new set of songs to play alongside some of our, ahem, ‘greatest hits’,” says drummer, Dave Morgan. “The Loft has always been just the same four people and it’s a real thrill to be playing across the UK with the band again. We’re sounding better than ever…”
Led by the songs of Peter Astor, The Loft were one of the forerunners of the indie sound in the mid-’80s U.K. scene. Combining the jangling guitars of folk-rock, Television-inspired deadpan vocals singing melancholy tunes, and timelessly hooky melodies, the group staked its claim to legendary status on the back of two singles — 1984’s ‘Why Does the Rain’ and 1985’s ‘Up the Hill and Down the Slope’ — released in the early days of Creation Records. The band’s progress was stopped in its tracks by an ugly breakup, but members have reunited through the years for the occasional live show and, notably, the release of the 2006 single ‘Model Village’.
“It’s hard to remember that once upon a time that pre-Oasis Creation Records were the hippest label in London as their roster tried to mesh post-punk with psychedelia. The Loft were the undoubted crown princes of that scene” – Louder than War
“Their joyous jangle is combined with a fierce intelligence. The Loft also don’t really sound like anything else on Creation Artifact” – We are Cults
