You're invited to Greene Street Friend School's Annual Black History Month Event, The Lion's Story!

Each year, the GSFS community comes together on this special evening to celebrate Black history, culture, and heritage. This year's program will include:

Showcase of Black History

In October 2025, in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Frances E. W. Harper’s birthday, a mural in her honor was dedicated at Greene Street Friends School. As an abolitionist, activist, poet, orator, and suffragist, Harper was — in her own right — both remarkable and accomplished. Yet she was also surrounded by and worked in community with other 19th century activists. Furthermore, her legacy continues to be felt and seen through the work of local artists and activists today!

For Black History Month this year, and in the spirit of Harper’s insistence that “we are all bound up together in one great bundle of humanity” GSFS students are learning more about all the individuals highlighted on the mural along with Harper. During The Lion's Story event, students can bring their families to tour classroom hallways where student learning will be featured.

Featured Performance

We are excited to have poet, musician, educator, and curator Yolanda Wisher as the evening's featured performer. In addition to her artistic work, Yolanda is also one of the Germantown poets included on the Harper mural!
