Combining the mighty roar of Roots/Reggae and the soulful growl of Blues & Ballads, The Lion (Mufassa) & The Bear (Gary James) are set to take the stage in the southwest of WA for this epic Sunday Session at The River, Margaret River. Their East (Sunshine Coast, QLD) meets West (Southwest, WA) working friendship was forged over a shared love of coastal life, celebrating simplicity, and creating genuine music and moments.
As a seasoned bass player Gary James has been fattening up the bottom end of Mufassa’s sun-soaked roots shows on the West Coast for the last couple of years and through Mufassa’s support and contacts he made the final push to release his solo debut “Older & Better” followed by the “Down the Road” Northwest tour in 2023. Mufassa, in turn has released his latest EP, "Drifting Away” (2024), recorded at Yama-Nui Studios on the Sunshine Coast, which has been favourably received by venue and festival audiences, and achieved No.2 on the AMRAP Charts.
As you can imagine the shows are flavoured with genre bending variety. As well as each having their own unique recipe’s for writing a song, The Lion & The Bear also bring their own organic spice to the mix. Acoustic guitar, ukulele, resonator, percussion will be featured in some of their more stripped back offerings and will pave the way for the churning low-end of bass and beats and resounding dubbed-out guitar that’ll feature in the party set. Whether you’re chasing the release of a sweat-drenched dance, adventure of a good yarn or the soothing balm of a reflective moment, this unlikely duo has you covered.
