Masked play is a powerful theatrical tool that unlocks creative freedom and inspires dynamic character work. Gestural mime fosters a precise physical language that leads to clear, nuanced, and emotive storytelling—reminding us that actions have power and the body speaks. In this workshop, led by Anana Rydvald and Zach Fraser participants will use full-faced and half-masks to explore physical storytelling with a playful, improvisational spirit. Together, they will develop complex, authentic characters while pushing creative boundaries, taking risks, and discovering new layers of voice, body, and emotional depth.
Connecting to the Biennale’s theme “Along Lines and Traces,” the workshop investigates how gestures and movements leave physical and symbolic marks—traces of history, identity, and imagination. Masks, as both concealment and revelation, become abstractions of these lines, embodying the stories we carry and the identities we shape.
