The Lincolnshire Show, 1869 – 1959. From touring the county to the permanent showground.

In this illustrated talk, organised by the SLHA in conjunction with Lincoln Central Library, Andrew Walker will explore the important part played by the Lincolnshire Show in the county’s life. At its heart, throughout its history, the show has offered the opportunity to demonstrate excellent agricultural practice, with exhibitions of a wide variety of animals, new implements, machinery and farming processes, but it has also played an important role socially and culturally. The talk will examine some of the sites around the county where the show has taken place, the reception it received by the host town, the organisation and layout of the showgrounds, and the reasons underlying the permanent move to its current home at Grange-de-Lings. Attention will also be paid to some of the wide-ranging prize categories on offer in the past, including some rather curious ones for agricultural labourers and servants.
