The Life and Legacy of Toshiko Takaezu: A talk with Mike ShewmakerEHCC Theater (Second Floor)
2-4 PM, April 4, 2026
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Toshiko Takaezu was one of the most important artists to emerge from the Big Island of Hawaii in the 20th century. Bringing her unique synthesis of wabi-sabi and abstract expressionism to ceramics, Toshiko navigated a field historically dominated by men to create some of the most treasured ceramic works collected today. On April 4th from 2-4 PM at East Hawai'i Cultural Center's 2nd Floor Theatre, Mike Shewmaker, a working sculptor in Toshiko's hometown, Pepeekeo, will guide us through her journey from Big Island girl to Princeton educator, to her retrospective at the Noguchi Museum, now a major exhibition at the Honolulu Museum of Art.
