Our popular Maritime History Lecture series continues with a fascinating local maritime story - the dramatic fate of the famous windjammer Herzogin Cecilie.
Built in Germany in 1902, this magnificent four-masted sailing ship became one of the fastest windjammers ever to sail the world’s oceans. She raced around Cape Horn carrying grain from Australia to Europe and became legendary in the final great era of commercial sail.
Her remarkable career came to a tragic end close to home when she ran aground in thick fog off Bolt Head near Salcombe, creating one of South Devon’s most famous shipwrecks.
Local historian Alasdair Anderson will tell the story of this extraordinary vessel, her thrilling grain races from Australia, and the dramatic circumstances of her final voyage and wreck on the Devon coast.
It is a tale of deep-sea sailing, fierce competition between the last great windjammers, and a maritime tragedy that still fascinates people across the South Hams today.
Lecture begins at 2:00pm
Join us for another afternoon exploring the remarkable stories of our maritime heritage in the unique surroundings of The Chart Room.
