About this Event

Kingsbury Library Coffee Morning

Geoffrey Scargill, chairman of The Watkin Society, will give a talk about the fascinating and often dramatic man, Sir Edward Watkin MP.

His one of the best known characters in Victorian Britain. The twist in the talk - the 'last laugh' - is the inside story of a lost masterpiece painting.

The talk covers the highlights of his creative life:

  • the first Parks for the People in Manchester,
  • his role in the foundation of Canada,
  • his Great Central Railway from Manchester to Marylebone
  • an Eiffel tower in Wembley
  • building the biggest fishing port in the world and a new holiday resort next to it
  • digging a Channel tunnel in 1880

Spaces limited book ahead.
