Geoffrey Scargill, chairman of The Watkin Society, will give a talk about the fascinating and often dramatic man, Sir Edward Watkin MP.
His one of the best known characters in Victorian Britain. The twist in the talk - the 'last laugh' - is the inside story of a lost masterpiece painting.
The talk covers the highlights of his creative life:
- the first Parks for the People in Manchester,
- his role in the foundation of Canada,
- his Great Central Railway from Manchester to Marylebone
- an Eiffel tower in Wembley
- building the biggest fishing port in the world and a new holiday resort next to it
- digging a Channel tunnel in 1880
