How Dr Suess's "The Lorax" could inform and inspire a more hopeful, responsible future for our lakefront, city, and planet.
About this Event

As our city and state road building agencies prepare plans for a lakefront speedway, let’s gather and reflect on the lessons from “The Lorax.” This event is for people of all ages who envision a Chicago that can truly thrive without a highway in its front yard.

This will be a collaborative gathering to meet others who have higher hopes for Chicago and might want to work together to do something about it. Here’s the agenda:

  • 10:00-10:30 Registration and mingle
  • 10:30- 10:45 Welcome and “Rules”; Land Acknowledgement; Icebreaker
  • 10:45-11:30 Reflections on “The Lorax” and lakefront speedway plans.
  • 11:30- 12:00 Break for the Lake
  • 12:00-1:00 Working Lunch; Discuss and brainstorm ideas for stopping the Once-ler.

The Lakefront and “The Lorax” is being organized by Nate Hutcheson, a participant in The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum’s C3 (Chicago Conservation Corps) Program that empowers participants to plan and lead a sustainability-focused project with access to some funding and other resources. Nate is planning this as the first in a series of events, Chicago Change Makers Forum, to highlight the big sustainability challenges and opportunities that Chicago won’t be able to address without changing its fifty-fiefdom structure.
