Take two former NZSO players, add an Australasian champion accordionist, and round it out with one of RNZ Concert’s most recognisable voices — and you’ve got The Kugels.Celebrating 15 years together, this much-loved ensemble has toured nationwide with Arts on Tour NZ and Chamber Music New Zealand, and appeared as guest artists at festivals across the country. Their sound is rooted in klezmer — the rich, expressive folk tradition of migrants from the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe — music that carries both joy and deep historical resonance.
Expect everything from wild, foot-stomping dance tunes to haunting, lyrical melodies, performed with flair, intelligence, and just the right amount of mischief. Alongside traditional repertoire, The Kugels champion original works by leading New Zealand composer Ross Harris, as well as new pieces by members of the band.
