A recent survey asked a cross section of scientists what motivates them to dedicate their lives to science. Some of the most common responses were the joy of discovery, a love of the natural world, and the desire to make a difference. Science, after all, is at its core a structured set of methods for trying to understand how the world works, and how we can use that understanding to make it a better place, however that is defined. What is the goal of teaching science?
Two of many possibilities are: to inspire the next generation of scientists, and to ensure people of all ages can understand how the world works so they can make decisions leading to positive rather than negative outcomes. This requires people to be interested and to engage with science. One way I have found to encourage most people of any age to engage with science is to facilitate for them the joy of discovery – helping them discover what you want them to learn rather than simply presenting it. Another is to encourage them to use their senses and bodies to become part of what they are trying to understand. Using interactive and collaborative art is a powerful way to achieve both of these.

Dr Marji Puotinen, Spatial - Ecological Data Scientist, Spatially Complex Ecology
Dr Puotinen is a geographer with extensive expertise in applying GIS and associated technologies to spatially complex ecological questions, particularly modelling the dynamics of stressors on marine benthos (coral reefs) and biota (fish, megafauna). She aims to conduct research that helps design effective conservation strategies for key ecosystems like coral reefs by improving our understanding of how such ecosystems are affected by broad scale stressors (tropical cyclone generated waves, thermal stress, pollutants) now and under future climates. An additional recent focus is quantitative marine benthic habitat modelling and associated survey design.
