Many people studying the Tarot focus on the meanings of individual cards in isolation. The Inner Structure of the Tarot offers another approach: understanding the cards as a coherent symbolic system based on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. The Tree of Life describes the unfolding relationship between spirit and matter. Each of its ten spheres corresponds to the Minor Arcana and the Court Cards. The meaning of a card emerges from the meaning of its sphere, expressed through the card’s suit: Wands, Swords, Cups, or Pentacles.
The Tree’s ten spheres are connected by twenty-two paths, each of which corresponds to one of the Major Arcana. The meaning of each Major Arcanum becomes clearer when understood through its place in the Tree and the spheres it connects.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll see how the entire deck forms an interconnected symbolic map rather than a collection of separate meanings.
This workshop includes two two-hour sessions (Sun April 19th and Sun April 26th) with discussion and hands-on work with the Tarot. The cost of the entire workshop is $50.
Prerequisites: None, though some familiarity with Tarot—especially the Rider-Waite or Thoth (Crowley) decks—is helpful.
About Tom: I began studying the Western Mystery Traditions, astrology, and the Tarot in my teenage years, and I have used the Tarot as a focus for meditation since 1975. I have been teaching astrology and Tarot at Illuminations for several years.
