SHOW DESCRIPTION:
Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy skewers Victorian sensibilities with witty dialogue while hilariously turning inside-out the very concept of identity. This streamlined adaptation retains the charm of the original and adds even more layers to the question of “Who am I, really?” Still, what’s most important is being earnest—or Ernest, as the case may be.
CHARACTERS:
(The “age range” is the age the character should appear, not the age of the actor)
• Lane, Algernon’s manservant; age range open
• Merriman, Jack’s butler; age range open
(Lane and Merriman could be played by the same actor)
• Jack Worthing: well-to-do, serious-minded young man and Gwendolyn’s sweetheart; age range 20s
• Algernon Moncrieff: fun-loving gadabout; age range 20s. Algernon will be played as genderfluid. All actors who can play the age range are welcome to audition.
• Lady Bracknell: opinionated, commandeering woman, Gwendolyn’s mother; age range 40s-60s. Bracknell is sometimes played as a drag role. All actors who can play the age range are welcome to audition.
• Gwendolen Fairfax: confident young woman, Lady Bracknell’s daughter and Jack’s sweetheart; age range 20s
• Cecily Cardew: idealistic and romantic young woman, Jack’s ward; age range late teens
• Miss Prism: older woman, governess to Cecily; age range 40s-60s
• Reverend Chasuble: the local clergyman; age range 40s-60s
Performance dates are May 9-10 and 16-17.
