The Hot Club of Buffalo is a 4-piece World and Gypsy Jazz band and 7-time winner of Jazzbuffalo.org’s “Best World Jazz group”. Gypsy Jazz music was pioneered in the 1930s by virtuoso guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli. This style blends the swing and improvisation of American jazz with the exotic melodies and rhythms associated with European Romani (Gypsy) music. The Hot Club of Buffalo is also inspired by the music of Spain and South America and performs rhumba and bossanova styles.
The current lineup includes Dean Gionis (guitar), Josh Assad (guitar & vocals) E.J. Koeppel (violin) and James Benders (upright bass).
The Hot Club of Buffalo has been performing regionally for the past 14 at local venues and festivals in the Western New York Region, from jazz nights at galleries and arts spaces to larger concerts at festivals and theaters. They’re known for engaging audiences who enjoy both listening and dancing to their swing-infused acoustic jazz. In essence, the Hot Club of Buffalo brings a spirited, acoustic, and globally influenced jazz experience to the Western New York music scene, honoring the Gypsy Jazz tradition while making it fresh and accessible for today’s audiences.
