The Horsenecks are Gabrielle Macrae and Barry Southern, a dynamic duo based in Astoria, Oregon, whose music crackles with the living spirit of American roots traditions. Both multi-instrumentalists, they draw from deep wells of influence—early Appalachian fiddle and banjo music, classic bluegrass, country, and original folk—braiding old sounds into something vividly their own.
Gabrielle Macrae’s fiddle playing is shaped by a lifetime immersed in traditional music. Raised in Portland, Oregon’s rich Old Time scene, she honed her style through years of traveling to festivals across the Southeast, learning directly from master fiddlers and absorbing regional traditions at their source. Now an accomplished songwriter, Gabrielle blends that traditional foundation with modern sensibilities, crafting songs and tunes that feel both timeless and urgently present—rooted in history while pushing its story forward.
Barry Southern brings a wide-ranging musical voice to the duo, moving effortlessly between banjo and guitar. His playing can be fiery and driving or dark and atmospheric, whether flatpicking guitar, clawhammer banjo, or unleashing high-energy three-finger banjo lines. A mainstay of the Liverpool music scene for over two decades, Barry has performed extensively as lead guitarist for cult favorites Tramp Attack and with numerous bands in the UK’s Old Time and Bluegrass communities.
After meeting at a music festival in 2012, Gabrielle and Barry began playing together immediately, forming The Horsenecks soon after. At the heart of their sound is powerful harmony singing, surrounded by virtuosic musicianship and a shared reverence for tradition. Together, The Horsenecks have carved out a distinctive voice, earning recognition as compelling and contemporary interpreters of American traditional music today.
