About this Event
This talk considers the history of the house from the time that it was built (1547-50) to the present. I will look briefly at the Bridgettine Abbey that was on the site for 100 years prior to this time. Because Syon has been privately owned by the Percy family - the Earls and latterly Dukes of Northumberland - since 1594, it has been witness to much history over the centuries, largely because of the prominence of the Percys as senior courtiers, public servants and aristocrats during this time. As one would expect, there is much fine art, furniture and interior design on show at Syon .
Patrick Russell is a retired teacher and counsellor who has been a room and house guide at Syon since retiring in 2011. His first and second degrees are in Literature but in retirement he has gained a Diploma in Higher Education in History of Art and Architecture and more recently a Masters degree in History from Wolfson College Cambridge.
