About this Event
Join us for an in-depth exploration of the journey toward freedom in America. This comprehensive presentation traces the Abolitionist movement from the 1830s through the Civil War while highlighting the shifting views of Abraham Lincoln. Attendees will learn about the pivotal military orders and political maneuvers that led to the Emancipation Proclamation. The session also details the liberation of enslaved people across the South, including a look at Florida’s own Emancipation Day on May 20. The program concludes by examining the events of June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, and the evolution of Juneteenth into a national holiday.
This program will be led by historian and author Christopher Daley. Bringing over 30 years of experience as a researcher and former historical consultant for the Travel Channel, Christopher uses his background as a veteran educator to share the stories that shaped the American experience.
This program is a live virtual presentation with the speaker appearing remotely that you can attend in person at the library or watch from home via Zoom.
