Part 2: "The Remarkable Life of Celia Laighton Thaxter” is a slide presentation that explores the life story of Celia Thaxter, from her childhood on White Island Light to her unexpected fame as a writer. In this program, actor and researcher Stephanie Voss Nugent invites participants to join her "backstage," as she transforms historical research into performance. From the vantage point of the actor stepping into a role, we examine the forces that shaped Thaxter's work and are introduced to some of the writers, musicians, and artists who followed Celia to her island home each summer. 60-75 min with Q&A at the end of the event. No registration is required.Stephanie Voss Nugent is ACT ONE’s founding Executive Director and a professional actor, producer, and director. She received her training at the University of Texas at Austin, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts and was a member of the professional company at Theatre By The Sea in Portsmouth, NH, playing such roles as Emilia in Othello, Lizzie in The Rainmaker, Sonya in Uncle Vanya, Agnes in Shadowbox, and Jessie in ‘Night, Mother. Directing credits include Joe DiPietro’s Over the River & Through the Woods; Jack Neary’s The Porch and Jerry Finnegan’s Sister; Neil Simon’s I Ought To Be In Pictures, A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters, Kathleen Clark’s Southern Comforts, Lee Blessing’s A Body of Water, Michael Healey’s The Drawer Boy, Arlene Hutton’s Last Train to Nibroc, A.R. Gurney’s Ancestral Voices, Norm Foster’s Mending Fences, a staged reading of Lester Dubow’s Look…There’s a Boat, David Belke’s That Darn Plot, Norm Foster’s Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun, Caroline Wood’s The Immigrant Garden, and Norm Foster’s On A First Name Basis. Since 1981 Stephanie has toured the region with a series of programs about Celia Thaxter and the Isles of Shoals, designed for presentation in theatres as well as schools, libraries, historical societies, church fellowships, and other gatherings.
