Morphology talk: This talk begins by describing what kauri gum is, including placing it within the world of natural resins. It goes on to describe the different types of kauri gum, what it has been used for (including the great collections), where to find it today and what to do with it. There is some discussion on kauri amber, in particular the international research into flora and fauna inclusions. The talk includes a modest historical overview.
History talk: This talk begins by describing what kauri gum is. Māori uses for kauri gum and spirituality is discussed before moving on to look at early non Māori contact with kauri gum. The beginning of the kauri gum industry, through to it becoming one of New Zealand's most important export industries, and through to its eventual disappearance is explored. Life on the gum fields, including an exploration of who was there and why (and who was not there) is discussed, together with the industry's impact on New Zealand today.
