From theology to secularism: Professor Evans traces how religion lost its voice in bioethics, and whether it can return
About this Event

The History and Future of Religion in U.S. Bioethics: Will a Religious Voice Re-emerge?

Join us for an Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion public seminar with Professor John Evans (Tata Chancellor’s Chair in Social Sciences and Co-Director of the Institute for Practical Ethics at the University of California, San Diego).

In this talk Professor John Evans will discuss the field of bioethics, which in the U.S. and the UK exists to give policy-makers ethical advice on new biotechnologies. At the formation of bioethics in the U.S. in the 1960s the field was theological. Now, theologians are no longer involved with the mainstream debate. Professor Evans will explain how this transformation happened and whether theological voices will be able to re-enter the future debate.
