The Hanepoot Brass Band line-up resembles that of the famous Brass Bands of New Orleans, but they uniquely perform the indigenous jazz styles of South Africa, with strong roots in the “goema”, the heartbeat of Cape Town’s own carnival bands, the “Kaapse Klopse”.Started in 2019 by trombonist, composer, arranger and bandleader Jannie “Hanepoot” van Tonder, The Hanepoot Brass Band is an acoustic brass band comprising 6 horns and a 2-piece rhythm section.
The band includes experienced professional musicians from all over the Western Cape, all of whom have strong background as teachers and members of community-based cultural projects:
Jannie Hanepoot (from Montagu, Klein Karoo) on Trombone, Carlton Adams (Elsiesrivier) and Siraaj Allen (Delft) on Trumpet, Simon Bates (Woodstock) on Tenor Sax, Duncan Johnson (Retreat)
on Baritone Sax, Zhaun Gorridon (Athlone) on Sousaphone, Nick Turner (Loeriesfontein) on Banjo
and Carlo Fabe (Westridge) on Percussion.
Audiences are loving the acoustic sound and the rich South African repertoire, which includes original material as well as dedications to the work of some of our great composers past and present.
Like the bandleader, the band is named after our indigenous sweet “Hanepoot” grape cultivar, found on every kitchen table in the Western Cape, and famous for the unique desert wine it produces. Expect a passionate and colourful group of musicians playing goema, mbaqanga, marabi and kwela
tunes, covering tight arrangements, wild improvisations and everything in between.
