About this Event
Trebinje was an important Habsburg garrison after 1878, close to the Dalmatian coast and the new border with Montenegro. The city itself had been under siege in 1875, and many local people welcomed the new regime and the prospect of peace. Determined to control Bosnia and Hercegovina, military leaders formed a strong view of local Orthodox insurgents during the 1882 Rebellion. This book looks at the everyday history of the garrison in peace and war using personal accounts and diaries. It also examines the downfall of Habsburg military power in 1918.

Cathie Carmichael has research interests in national identity, borders and violence especially in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean. She is the author and editor of several books including Slovenia and the Slovenes: A Small State in the New Europe (with James Gow), Language and Nationalism in Europe (co-edited with the late Stephen Barbour), The Routledge History of Genocide (co-edited with Richard Maguire), Ethnic Cleansing in the Balkans: Nationalism and the Destruction of Tradition, Genocide before the Holocaust; A Concise History of Bosnia and the Cambridge History of Nationhood and Nationalism (co-edited with Matthew D'Auria and Aviel Roshwald). She has also edited special editions of European History Quarterly, Journal of Genocide Research, Europe-Asia Studies and History.
