Since 1977, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd's plaque has graced the Shrine Room wall at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Visitors to those hallowed halls read an inscription declaring that Pop was "regarded as the finest shortstop to play in Negro baseball" and that among his many accomplishments, he was "instrumental in opening Yankee Stadium to Negro professional baseball in 1930." The plaque identifies Pop as the "finest" and labels him "instrumental"—bold claims that will be examined and substantiated.Dr. Lawrence Hogan is Professor Emeritus of History at Union County College, recognized as a leading scholar on Black baseball and hailed as a "National Treasure" by MLB's official historian. Kevin Kane is a writer, musician, and playwright who taught performing arts in New York and worked closely with legendary playwright August Wilson.
