About this Event
Attention, attention! A truly fascinating lecture is coming up!
On February 5 at 7:00 PM, White Rabbit is delighted to welcome Mark Molesky, who will present his acclaimed book In This Gulf of Fire: The Great Lisbon Earthquake, or Apocalypse in the Age of Science and Reason (Knopf, 2015).
In this gripping and authoritative work, Mark Molesky tells the dramatic story of one of the most destructive natural disasters in history. The catastrophic earthquake, followed by a massive tsunami and a deadly firestorm, devastated Lisbon and sent shockwaves throughout the Western world. The disaster prompted the first international relief effort, contributed to the rise of a brutal yet modernizing dictatorship in Portugal, and profoundly altered the spirit and direction of the European Enlightenment.
A finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and winner of the Phi Alpha Theta Best Subsequent Book Award, In This Gulf of Fire is both a powerful historical narrative and a meditation on science, reason, and catastrophe.
Mark Molesky is Professor of History at Seton Hall University. He received his A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he was a Lecturer in History and Literature. A specialist in European intellectual and cultural history, his work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Portuguese Studies, and The New Criterion.
