🇿🇦✨ Freedom Day Walking Tour: Discover the Origins of Johannesburg!Looking for a unique way to spend Freedom Day? Join us on 27 April at 09:00 for a fascinating 4-hour walking journey through the historic heart of Johannesburg — where gold, revolutionaries, and larger-than-life personalities shaped the City of Gold.
We start at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, meeting the legendary “Pick Handle Mary” and admiring vibrant jazz murals by street artist Dbongz Mahlathi. From there we wander through the bustling market streets and admire the Art Deco gem Anstey's Building.
Hear the incredible story of Johannesburg’s birth near the South Gauteng High Court, where mining commissioner Carl von Brandis helped shape the early gold-rush town of Randjeslaagte.
Along the way we explore Oppenheimer Park, the revived Gandhi Square and the story of young lawyer Mahatma Gandhi. We’ll even visit a hidden gold mine stope beneath Standard Bank — right where the gold rush began.
The tour ends at the historic law offices of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo, pioneers who used the law to fight injustice.
