About this Event

The jewel that is Burghley House was built by William Cecil who was the most loyal and trusted minister to Elizabeth I and throughout her reign the affairs of the nation passed through his hands. He was the founder of two dynasties, firstly here at Burghley, that of the Earls of Exeter and secondly with his second son the Marquesses of Salisbury.

The sumptuous contents at Burghley reflect Cecil’s high position, and these were augmented by the 5th Earl and Countess, who made the grand tour no less than three times! This very special day for the BADA Friends will include a private tour of the house accompanied by furniture restorer and expert Anthony Beech.

Guests will then have a light lunch in the delightful Orangery. Once refreshed the group will take a short walk to the stable block where they will have exclusive access to the textile workshop run by Landico who look after the tapestries within the house and elsewhere.

After this, guests can either go back into the house or they can visit the gardens at their leisure. The price will include a Zoom talk by Nicholas Merchant before the visit which will give guests an insight into this stunning house and the important artefacts that are contained within its walls.

Why not take a few days break within the area there is plenty to see nearby including Deene Park, The Palace of Apethorpe (check for opening times), Grimsthorpe Castle, Boughton House, The Triangular Lodge and Lyvden New Bield.

Stamford is a delightful town to make as your base with many independent shops and restaurants. Possible hotels to stay at are The George at Stamford, the William Cecil, or the Bull & Swan. Stamford also has a railway station which connects from the mainline Peterborough station which is less than an hour away from London.
