Sky Room Talk LectureTHE GREAT DEPRESSION ON FILM
Monday, February 16th at 8 PM
Hosted by film historian Glenn Andreiev
What was it like to be on a Great Depression era breadline? What was life like in a shantytown? Filmmaker and film historian Glen Andreiev returns to the Cinema with a presentation on the unforgettable films made during the Great Depression. While many films from that era (1929 to about 1936) offered musical or comedic escapism, other hard-hitting Great Depression films refused to sugarcoat. They depicted America on the brink of collapse. These raw films showcased the talent of Paul Muni, John Ford, Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Loretta Young, W.C Fields, Our Gang, and Charlie Chaplin. Regardless if they were wild comedies, gangster thrillers, or very angry films about reform, these films are a documentary record of the Great Depression.
