About this Event

While the idea of a young adult traveling throughout Europe before they enter 'the real world' might seem like a modern phenomenon, think again. Dating back to the 16th century, young European men were encouraged to travel to important historic sites throughout the continent for the purpose of becoming more worldly. How did this trend evolve throughout the centuries and how did it catch on in different parts of the globe? It's time to uncover one of the most important coming-of-age trips in the history of the western world.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the history of the Grand Tour, a rite of passage initially reserved for wealthy European young adults that took them to countries like France and Italy to become more educated and enriched individuals.

Led by Archaeologist and Egyptologist, Stacey Anne Bagdi, our virtual experience surrounding the Grand Tour — with a focus on British travelers to Europe during the 18th century — will include:

  • An overview of the what the Grand Tour was all about — its origins, heyday, and transition to tourism as we know it today
  • A discussion around who went on this elite tourist trip, as well as the notorious “Bear-Leaders” who'd be responsible for shepherding the young men on the trip
  • The primary routes of travel from Britain to Europe, with stories surrounding the difficulties of traveling by roads, sea, and even through the Alps
  • A closer look at what went on during the tour, including where these British travelers stayed, what food they ate during the 18th century, and what activities they undertook to enrich their experiences
  • A deep dive into untold female stories from the Grand Tour, such as the trailblazers who traveled solo

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Stacey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
